Ko Lanta's Hin Daeng & Hin Muang

The situation at Hin Daeng and Hin Muang is dramatic not only because of the diving, but also because of a very prominent presence of the Thai fishing fleet there, and the fact that these two tiny rocks, which are not more than 300 meters apart, are visited on average by about five dive boats daily ! These dive boats might be coming from Trang, Phuket, Koh Lanta, Krabi, Phi Phi Island, Koh Hai or even Singapore ! Most of these vessels are huge live-aboards that can accommodate up to about forty divers each . Necessarily these boats, having all the amenities of modern life, like air conditioning, hot and cold water showers, refrigeration etc, need to run their engines 24 hours a day, which results in a deafening roar underwater, which is enough to scare away even the most insensitive diver, not to speak of any marine life, or even the gentle giant, the whale shark (Rhincondon typus). Add to that the noise and stink of half a dozen Phi Phi speedboats above water, and you wish you'd have stayed on the beach for that day. All this put together is very irritating to the sensitive diver, but it is a fucking nightmare to the people who pioneered day trip dive trips to these formerly pristine sites seven years ago !
